Abstraction is useful but opaque
Abstracting rules from messy data/real world data is very useful for reducing redundancy and increasing efficiency, but later observers can't view the extraction process (including oneself!). This applies to stuff like code and to things like phonological rules.
We should show the complete process from specific to abstract when we teach.
